To produce a Porter in
a country with such a warm and tropical climate almost defies
convention. Typically a beer style for colder climes, some lighter or
sweeter examples such as ones containing chocolate work well when
chilled and in an area of mild to considerable heat.
The singular example
under investigation is Feral 'Smoked Porter'. The one with the big,
fat, hairy wild boar on the label. They were already on to a winner
with that image and with Porters being one of my favourite styles, it
would be hard to go wrong. With that in mind, I can be very precious
and picky.
My experience with
Smoked Porters has been very hit and miss, I love Porters but some
smoky ones are just terrible. Like the much overused cliché for
Marmite, “you either love it or hate it”. Feral Smoked Porter is
one of the former. It is very smoky but in a really good way. Not
medicinal like some peaty Islay Malt Whiskies can be, or savoury like
smoked bacon and cheeses. The smokiness was spot on. Overall the beer
had some similarities to what I think is one of the best Smoked
Porters out there, Beavertown's 'Smog Rocket'. That is a great thing,
showing just how good a Smoked Porter can be.
I have since tried the
Feral 'Hop Hog' IPA and that too was bloody brilliant, they seem to
have a good thing going.
